About this site
Very overdue for a re-write!! 17/05/11
Background
This site would not be possible without the contributions of you, the owners at Arc1950. I was inspired by my wonderful wife Carol to set up this site after our first visit to our new apartment in le Prince des Cimes, and that's when I registered the domain name arc1950owners.com. It began by collecting together information exchanged between owners on Rob Hubbard's excellent Discussion Board, and from anywhere else relevant to us as owners in this great new resort. It was originally planned as an extra resource, and not a replacement for the AOL mailing list - but that is now pretty quiet, and all the members have been migrated to this site.
We don't want to put off any potential visitors to our properties, so only selected pages are intended to be accessible to casual visitors.
Features
Now
One of the things I wanted to include was a searchable archive of the discussions between owners on issues which have arisen since Arc1950 started. I've also tried to keep copies of key circulars from Intrawest, etc as well as links to other related websites.
I've now been able to include a visits calendar actually on this site - thanks to Richard at Openia for adding the necessary component (CalendarX) to the server.
As well as the enquiry form, if any owner would like to publish details of their apartment(s) for sale, I can make space available on the public area of the site. Two owners have asked for this, and when there is something to see, it will get a prominent link from the 'not logged in' section of the site.
Next
Open to suggestions! Please email the appropriate contact below, or post them on the Discussion List if you think a wider circulation is needed.
Contacts
Owners in HMC buildings (Hameau, Refuge, Prince & Jardins) have a dedicated representative Vanessa Geisler who is Cait's replacement - a difficult act to follow. Vanessa's email address ia owners.arc1950@hmc-hotels.com - this is not a replacement service, or contact for Florence (bookings) or Cathy (passes), but for letting Vanessa know when you will be arriving (if early access required for example) or for other enquiries that you would normally direct to her.
Lodging and Service Committee (HMC)
If you would like to contact either of our two new representatives on this committee, set up to improve dialogue between owners and HMC, you can email Jim Wilks or our other new representative Claude Verhille, an owner in Hameau du Glacier, who is now retired and says he is looking forward to contributing to the improvement of the service levels at HMC. Following the first meeting of the new committee happens, Claude has now joined the site. Please address all communications to him in French only - good practice for us all! Nigel Campling has continued to cast his accountant's eye over HMC's figures for us.
Resort Club Committee
Johanne Marois has kindly agreed to represent HMC owners until someone else steps forward!.
Pictures
If you have pictures to put on the site, please send them to Kevin Free who is also helping run the site. He can also help if you want to include your picture in the members list.
There's now a very convenient (and free) place for you to put pictures on-line that you can then use to illustrate your posts in the discussion forums:
You just sign up, upload your picture (or even a video), and then copy/paste the URL reference to include the image in your posting. The site provides 1 Gigabyte of space (enough for about 10,000 videos and images).
Visitors Book
If you have an entry for the Visitors Book, please email it to Ian Gardner.
News Items
If you have something you think should appear on our news pages, please email it to Jim Wilks.
General issues
You can send an email to Richard Barlow about this site, or call me
on Skype (not forgetting to mention Arc1950 in the message box so I'll know who you are!) - I wouldn't be without it to stay in touch with our daughter in Australia using this free videophone:
The technology
This site is built using an open source content management system called 'Plone'. Hosting is provided (free for now) by Openia Ltd in Farnham, Surrey.
For the non-technical among you, what that means is that all changes to the site are done using a web browser, and now that we have reached a stage where more than one person wants to help maintain the site it's been easy to allow that. Content (the words we type) are separated from layout, style, appearance, etc. which again makes ongoing management much more feasible for someone who's not doing it as a day job!
Another feature of Plone is that the main prompts, labels, error messages, etc. are all presented in your browser's default language; so for example if you have French as your default setting, instead of 'home', 'news', etc. you'll see 'acceuil', 'actualités', etc.
The system is also capable of managing multi-lingual content, but is the webmaster? Perhaps we'll keep that up our sleeve (manche?) for the future . . . .
There are a few more details about Plone, etc. in this posting.
Best wishes to all fellow owners,
Richard Barlow
Apt. 2006, Le Prince des Cimes.
